Cadillac Mountain is the highest promontory on the Atlantic coast north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and must have been spotted by the Norse explorers around 1000 AD. It was noted by Verrazano, the Italian explorer sailing in service to France, in 1500, and it was he who coined the term "Acadia", based on an Abenaki Indian word. Champlain discovered the island in 1604, naming it Mount Desert because of it's bald peaks.

Cadillac granite forms the rocky basis of the mountain.
Cadillac granite is igneous rock (formed by volanic action) and the three primary crystals composing it -- feldspar (pink), quartz, and hornblende -- are clearly visible. The light gray and green patches are lichens.
